Sweetie Pie In 2006, one of the dogs that came to us from Mexico was a timid white cutie named Mona. A little bit shy and timid about being picked up, Mona was very healthy and soon entered our Adoption Center. A short while later, Beth and Vern Pugh visited our shelter and took Mona home. " We love her so much. She is a regular clown, and so sweet and full of energy. We didn’t think any dog could fill the gap when our little poodle, Angel, died a year ago.” say the Pughs. The Pughs did not like the name Mona and started calling her Sweetie Pie while they were thinking of a new name. She quickly decided her name was indeed Sweetie Pie and the name stuck. “And, she is just that!” say the Pughs. Sweetie Pie now spends her time chasing and never catching squirrels in the Pugh’s yard, playing tag along the back fence with the neighbor dogs, bringing her squeaky toys to “Mommy and Daddy” to throw, riding in the car to go shopping, visiting their son’s two housecats and generally watching over the neighborhood from the Pugh’s bay window. Thanks to several months of gentle words and kind touches from the Pughs, Sweetie Pie has gotten over her fears surrounding being picked up. She is still afraid of some noises--such as electric clippers--so the Pughs now use scissors to give Sweetie Pie her haircuts. They say she is gradually becoming less afraid of these kinds of sounds. “ Sweetie Pie is very intelligent and understands everything we say to her” according to the Pughs. “She knows when we are talking about her, even when we don’t say her name!” This little dog from Mexico traveled far to find a new home through the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s transfer program. Every night, Sweetie Pie sleeps at the head of the Pugh’s bed on a pillow just for her. As Sweetie Pie sleeps safely and comfortably on her pillow each night, we feel sure she feels the long journey to her forever home was well worth the trip.
