Lost but never forgotten, On January 6th, right in the middle of one of the Boulder Valley’s severest winters on record, the Kiefer family’s dear Chihuahua, Ernesto disappeared. Lost or possibly stolen, the distraught family searched endlessly for their dear pet. They spent countless hours looking for him. They placed signs asking for help and came in and filed a report with us in case he turned up. It appeared Ernesto was nowhere to be found. Weeks passed and the Kiefers were just about to give up hope on finding Ernesto ever again. Then, about two and a half months after Ernesto disappeared, Kate Kiefer “had a funny feeling” and decided to stop in one last time at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley to see if there was any sign of Ernesto. Once she arrived Kate found out her lost report had expired after two months, but luck was on her side. Our staff noticed Animal Control has just brought in a stray Chihuahua and escorted Kate into our kennel area on the slight chance this could be her dog. She walked in and sitting there was Ernesto! There were lots of tears shed amidst a very fast wagging tail – it was one of the most joyous reunions we’ve ever seen! How Ernesto, a tiny 5 lbs. Chihuahua, disappeared and survived for two months in one of Boulder’s harshest winters ever will always be a mystery. Since his adventure Ernesto has received a microchip, courtesy of HSBV, which will help reunite him with his loving family should he ever stray away from home again. If you have lost your pet, please contact
the Humane Society immediately and file a Lost Report and visit the
Humane Society's Lost and Found center at least every 48 hours to see
if your animal is here. It is important to provide your animal
with a collar and current identification tags, have your animal microchipped
and keep current photos. Include your name, address, and telephone
number on your animals' tags. SEE ALL THE CURRENT DOGS FOR ADOPTION AT HSBV
