A Very Special Love Story

Chelly and her companion cat, Katrina, were surrendered together by their guardian to our shelter. Katrina was adopted almost immediately but Chelly (or Chelsea as our staff came to call her) felt overwhelmed in her new life at the shelter. Losing the only home she had ever known, along with her buddy Katrina, left Chelly in a depression. She stopped eating and was admitted to our Veterinary Clinic for treatment of anorexia. Our clinic staff figured out what food she liked and Chelly began to eat again. But, Chelly still showed signs that she was not adjusting well. Kristin Hall, a staff member, welcomed Chelly into her home and she began to flourish.

Once in a foster home, she “ate her food like a champion, met me at the door and helped me get ready for work each morning” said Kristin. “Chelly would come up on the bed and do her 'Chelly dance' (knead her paws on the blanket), have some crunchy cat treats and settle down on the bed for the night” said Kristin.

Alfred arrived at our shelter as a stray. Severely dehydrated, hypothermic and emaciated, our veterinary staff did not think he would survive another day. At first, our vets thought Alfred had a disease or had ingested a toxin of some sort. But, after Alfred responded so well to supportive care – fluids and warmth – staff concluded Alfred’s condition was a consequence of exposure to the severe winter weather we had this year. As a geriatric cat – we estimated he was 10-14 years old – it was taking all of Alfred’s energy to try and stay warm when he was out in the elements.

Alfred and Chelly entered our Adoption Center when they had fully recovered. Both cats were ready to find a new home. The two cats ended up sharing a condo in our Adoption Center and quickly bonded.

Soon, a wonderful family came in to adopt a cat and fell in love with Chelly. Our staff mentioned Alfred’s story and how bonded the two cats had become. With an open mind and an open heart, the family decided that they could welcome two new cats into their home.
Chelly and Alfred went home together – both beginning a new chapter in their lives. Chelly and Alfred found the patience, care and attention they so desperately needed at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.

They also found a new home…and each other - for a lifetime.
