Time and Patience Make the Difference for Two Puppies Recently two puppies arrived at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley through our Animal Transfer Program. Stray and feral, these two under-socialized and timid puppies needed lots of behavior rehabilitation right away to become accustomed to people. The puppies also both had a skin condition from a parasitic mite and needed immediate veterinary care and treatment. Our Behavior and Health and Training Staff determined that the pups – both female and five months of age – were at a critical stage in their development. They would need lots of positive associations in order to learn to trust people – imperative for them to find a new home and form a bond with a new guardian. Audrey, who looked most like a german shepherd was the most fearful of the two puppies. Fresh, who looked like an australian shepherd, could be lured to come towards a human with tempting treats. To gain people skills and become comfortable with living in a household, the puppies went into our Foster Care Program where they had the personalized care of volunteer, Dennis Brady. Dennis gave the puppies intense attention and let them grow accustomed to all the sights and sounds of the indoors. He took them in his car to visit friends and got everyone that would to offer the puppies treats and even hold them. His efforts to help the puppies become used to people and accepting of attention and affection paid off and soon they were ready to enter our Adoption Center. Both puppies were adopted quickly into new, loving homes. We recently received an email from Audrey’s new family. Audrey, now Cassidy, has improved tremendously and gets along with the other dog in the household. “She has really come out of her shell,” wrote Raja Ridgway, Cassidy’s new guardian. “Thanks for letting us get such an awesome pet!” Audrey and Fresh are excellent examples of what our individualized behavior rehabilitation programs can do to help animals find new homes. With a little time, patience and a strategic plan to help these puppies learn the life skills they needed, we were able to give them the second chance they deserved to have a new, loving home.
